Lingnan University is a distinctive liberal arts institution in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It offers honours bachelor's degrees and postgraduate programmes up to the doctoral level. Applications are invited for the following positions:

1. Assistant Library Officer II (Cataloguing & End-processing) (Post Ref.: 06/143/LA)

The appointee will assist the Cataloguing Librarian in: (a) cataloguing and classifying monographic and audiovisual materials; (b) planning, implementing and managing end-processing and preservation operations for library materials; and (c) supervision and training of supporting staff and part-time helpers. Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor's degree in related disciplines, or a relevant Associate Degree plus working experience; (ii) knowledge of AACR2r, MARC21, LCSH, LCCS, DDC, New Classification Scheme for Chinese Libraries; (iii) knowledge of MS Office applications; (iv) strong communication skills and a good command of English and Chinese (including Putonghua). Skills in Cang-jie inputting method and Pin-yin system will be highly preferred. Previous experience in academic libraries and knowledge of the Innopac/Millennium Library System will be advantageous.

Salary and Fringe Benefits:

The monthly salary will be around $11,100 to $18,000. Commencing salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits, where applicable, include annual leave, medical benefits, mandatory provident fund and gratuity.

 

2. Assistant Library Officer II (Systems Development & Support) (Post Ref.: 06/144/LA)

The appointee will be required to: (a) assist in the planning, implementation, and management of various library systems; (b) provide technical support to library service developments; (c) monitor systems usage and performance; and (d) ensure data security and seamless access to library networked resources. The appointee will also assist in supervision and training of supporting staff. Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or a related discipline, or a relevant Associate Degree plus working experience; (ii) knowledge of UNIX, MS operating systems and networking; (iii) knowledge of programming languages, e.g. ASP.net, PHP, Perl, Visual Basic, JavaScript; and (iv) strong communication skills and a good command of English and Chinese (including Putonghua). Previous experience in academic libraries and knowledge of the Innopac/Millennium Library System will be advantageous.

(1) Assistant Librarian I/II (Business) [Ref. B/663/09]

Duties : Develop the business collection with special focus on China business in general and Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta in particular; evaluate and develop the electronic resources collection; render business information and reference services; provide user education to the University community which involves creating instructional materials, designing and conducting orientation activities, library classes and online programmes; liaise with faculty and institutions, organize academic exchange functions and outreach activities; initiate consultation and publishing services to researchers; participate in digital initiatives; and undertake other ad-hoc tasks as assigned.

Requirements : A good honours degree in business or economics plus a recognized post-graduate professional qualification in Librarianship or Information Science (MLS or equivalent), with excellent communication and writing skills in English and Chinese. Fluency in Putonghua; working experience in an academic library, in library reference/information services (including traditional and electronic resources) and in teaching; and strong qualities in motivation, innovation, leadership and organizational ability desired. Working in the evenings, on Saturdays and Sundays and overseas travel required. The appointee is expected to report for duty as soon as possible .

(2) Assistant Librarian II (Information Services and User Education Section) [Ref. B/620/09]

Duties : Render information and reference services, provide user education to the University community, develop the reference collection, evaluate and develop the electronic resources collection, assist in faculty liaison and outreach services, participate in digital initiatives, and undertake other ad-hoc tasks as assigned.

Requirements : A good honours degree in any discipline plus a recognized post-graduate professional qualification in Librarianship or Information Science (MLS or equivalent), with excellent communication and writing skills in English and Chinese. Strong qualities in project management, planning, motivation, teamateship and leadership desired. Working in the evenings, on Saturdays and Sundays required.  The appointee is expected to report for duty as soon as possible .

Salary and Conditions of Service

Assistant Librarian I : HK$34,695 - $49,425 per month

Assistant Librarian II : HK$31,730 - $40,610 per month

Salary offered will be highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract; fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental schemes. For the post of Assistant Librarian I, housing benefit may be provided where applicable.

Assistant Librarian II – Library (Information Services)

The appointee, being part of a team of information professionals, will be providing reference and information services to Institute staff and students through rostered shifts at the Information Desk, the delivery of information literacy classes, and assistance in Library research and Departmental liaison duties in the Information Services Section of our Mong Man Wai Library.

In addition, the appointee will be engaged in a Library research project concerning the design and implementation of information literacy programs at HKIEd, and will be part of the project team to conduct the research and prepare a report and recommendations.

The successful candidate should possess a recognised degree in librarianship, or a first degree plus post-graduate qualification in librarianship. The candidate should also have at least two years professional information experience, preferably in an academic library. Fluency in written and spoken Chinese and English is essential. The position is available for immediate commencement and initially tenable for four months.

Remuneration will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the appointee. Leave and medical benefits will be provided as appropriate.

The appointee will play a supervisory role in the Acquisitions & Gift and Exchange Section of the Library. He/She will be required to (a) manage the acquisitions and gift and exchange operations, including selection and ordering of monographic and audiovisual materials in all languages; (b) assist in formulating and reviewing related policies and procedures; (c) administer and monitor the related budget; (d) participate in collection development activities; (e) liaise with book vendors, academic departments, and related stakeholders; and (f) supervise and train supporting staff.

Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field ; (ii) recognized professional qualifications in Librarianship (MLS or equivalent); (iii) at least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in library acquisitions and gift and exchange; (iv) a good command of English and Chinese (including Putonghua); and (v) strong planning, analytical, negotiation and project management skills. Working knowledge of the III Millennium Library System as well as a solid grasp of the publishing market and vendors will be advantageous.

Salary and Fringe Benefits:

The monthly salary will be around $18,900 to $26,500. Commencing salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Upon promotion to Assistant Librarian I, the salary ranges from $26,500 to $36,500. Fringe benefits, where applicable, include leave, medical benefits, mandatory provident fund and gratuity.
