Sponsorship & Awards

Heleni Linton Bursary

Introduction

Heleni Linton was an outstanding librarian who worked for Ernst and Young Hong Kong, an international accountancy firm. She was tragically killed in a plane crash in May 1991. The Heleni Linton Memorial Account was established later that same year from funds donated by Ernst and Young, by colleagues, and by friends. From December 1992 on, interest accrued to the account is being used to award a modest annual Bursary bearing her name. The beneficiary will receive the Bursary at a ceremony held at the December annual general meeting of the Hong Kong Library Association. This year, the Bursary to the amount of HK$5,000 will be awarded.

Who Can Apply?

You are eligible to apply for the Bursary if:

  • you are a resident of Hong Kong or Mainland China
  • you held a current membership in the Hong Kong Library Association
  • you are pursuing, or are thinking to pursue, a course of formal study to achieve professional status in librarianship and /or information science
  • you have worked, are working, or are about to work in a library or information bureau

What Kind Of Proposal Can The Award Be Used For?

The Hong Kong Library Association will consider applications from full or part-time students of library and information science to assist in their studies. For example, the Bursary might help with research costs, conference attendance, short sabbaticals, course fees and the like.

How To Apply?

Fill in the form [please click to download a copy] and send it to the President, Hong Kong Library Association, PO Box 10095, Hong Kong, by 31 August. Additional materials can accompany the application form.

Further, the heads of major library institutions in Hong Kong may nominate individuals as candidates for this award.

How Will The Applications Be Assessed?

A panel of at least three members will be formed including the President and Honorary Secretary of the Hong Kong Library Association and a representative from the Firm of Ernst and Young. They will meet once a year to review the applications. The panel will be looking for a high level of real merit in each case. Applicants should demonstrate in the application:

  • the likely impact of the Bursary on the career of the applicant
  • the potential applicability and contribution of the proposal to library and information science in the region
  • the originality of idea of the proposal
  • a commitment to the library profession in general and to the work of the Association in particular will be considered an advantage. The Panel will also take into consideration excellence in presentation of the proposal

The Panel's decision will be final. No correspondence will be entered into concerning the result of their deliberation.
